This backcountry clinic is a hands on day built around real situations you will actually encounter in the field. The day moves with intention and gives you time to ask questions, see how decisions are made, and understand why things are done a certain way. You will work with horses and see how packing, stock handling, and managing a group come together.

The clinic is useful whether you are newer to backcountry travel or already have experience and want to sharpen your skills. Because this takes place in a working environment, what you learn is practical and transferable. You will see how horses are prepared, how loads are balanced, and how adjustments are made along the way. This is a solid clinic if you want to build confidence, improve decision making, and leave with skills you can apply right away.

Meet Your Instructors

Thomas Clover

Thomas carries on a deep family legacy in the wilderness. His grandfather founded Wilderness Trails Outfitters in 1957, and today Thomas is one of the owners, leading backcountry trips and continuing the family tradition of packing stock and traveling through remote country. As a lifelong packer and horseman, he brings decades of hands on experience working with horses and mules in demanding terrain and changing conditions. His knowledge of the land, logistics, and traditional packing methods allows trips to run smoothly while staying rooted in a strong ethic of stewardship and respect for wild places.

Brie Galloway

Brie is an avid outdoorswoman with a deep passion for multi day pack trips and traveling thoughtfully through the backcountry. She is one of the founders of Cowgirl Camp and regularly runs backcountry trips with groups of women, creating spaces that are both empowering and rooted in practical wilderness skills. Her focus is on low impact, lightweight travel that allows guests to cover meaningful ground while minimizing their footprint on the land. With extensive experience planning and leading backcountry trips, Brie is highly knowledgeable in camp systems, route planning, and efficient packing strategies using horses and mules.

Gwyn Knight

Gwyn Knight has been a wrangler with Wilderness Trails for many years and brings a deep, practical understanding of horses and backcountry travel to every trip. Through years of hands on work in camp and on the trail, she has developed a strong ability to read horses, manage pack stock, and support guests in a wide range of riding situations. Gwyn also works closely with Thomas Clover training horses, giving her a well rounded foundation in horsemanship that emphasizes patience, consistency, and clear communication.
