Join us for a unique 2026 pack trip
7 DAYS INTO THE YELLOWSTONE THOROFARE
We’ve opened up 4 additional spots for our longest pack trip of the season.
Spend a week riding into the Yellowstone Thorofare, one of the most remote and untouched areas in the lower 48. Your trip begins with a boat ride across Yellowstone Lake before heading out on horseback through open meadows, river valleys, and deep backcountry, far from roads and crowds. With a small group and experienced crew, everything is well organized and taken care of so you can settle into the rhythm of camp life, share meals around the fire, and experience this part of Yellowstone in a way very few people do.

Bears do live in this area, but it’s not something you need to be worried about. Our camp is set up with bear safety in mind, and our crew is trained and experienced in operating in bear country. We handle all food storage properly and keep a clean camp, which is the biggest factor in preventing issues.
It is extremely rare to see a bear near our camp, and when you’re out riding or exploring, your guide will walk you through what to do to stay safe. We’ll also explain all bear safety protocols when you arrive so you feel comfortable and prepared.
-
Yes, we get a lot of solo travelers. Our camp is family run and all meals are communal, so it’s a very welcoming atmosphere. We make sure our guests feel like a part of camp right away.
-
Our rides aren’t designed to be fast paced due to the mountainous terrain we ride in. We do not offer opportunities to canter, gallop, or lope.
What we do offer is some of the most scenic horseback riding in Yellowstone and the surrounding wilderness areas. Even experienced, skilled riders still really enjoy our trips, with options for longer ride bookings and more varied terrain. Give us a call any time to chat about this!
-
We provide the horses and gear for all of our guests. At this time, we’re not able to accommodate outside horses. We may offer workshops in the future where this could be a possibility, so keep an eye on our socials!
Itinerary
August 21st - 27th, 2026
To help make your arrival as smooth and relaxed as possible, you’re welcome to join us the evening prior (August 20th) at our basecamp at Sheffield Creek at no additional charge.
If you’d like assistance with transportation, we can arrange a shuttle from Sheffield Creek to Grant Village for your boat departure. The rate is $250 each way for up to 6 guests, including up to 50 lbs of personal gear per person.
Over the course of the week, you’ll travel deeper into the Thorofare with a mix of steady riding days and time to enjoy the area. The rides are long, scenic, not just out and back. Camp life is comfortable and well run, with a crew that handles the details and keeps things moving without it ever feeling rushed. Meals are a highlight, with hearty, well prepared food that everyone looks forward to at the end of the day. It is a fully supported trip that still feels authentic, and one that very few people ever get the chance to experience.

Guest Testimonials
“Horseback camping in Yellowstone was a bucket list trip, and it exceeded my expectations! The crew were the nicest, hard working people I have ever met in the tour service industry. The food was so phenomenal I had to skip lunch to reduce how much weight I gained. The nature of Yellowstone is wonderful!
I highly recommend Wilderness Trails outfitters. They are great people!.”
— Ron, 2025 Pack Trip“Wilderness Trails runs a fantastic operation. I'm an active equestrian with many years of experience and was looking for something other than the typical nose-to-tail tourist rides. I found Wilderness Trails via another social media site's equestrian sub and was very glad I did! This is the outfitter I will absolutely return to on my next trip to Teton.”
— Laurel R., 2025“The trip of a lifetime! What an amazing amazing place and wonderful wonderful people! Allison and her team made mums dream of a lifetime come true - riding through the mountains and some! They made us feel like part of their beautiful family and made our whole trip unforgettable.
